In the unfortunate circumstance of an individual with ASD being arrested, there are two possible resources that we are aware of at this time:
Please request to have the person with autism transferred to MENTAL HEALTH COURT. This program slows down the process to look at any extenuating circumstances around the alleged crime. All referred individuals receive a mental health evaluation to determine the presence of a psychiatric problem and identify the services required. Medication services are provided as needed. Mental health professionals can assist the court in providing appropriate assessment and placement of criminal defendants suffering from a mental illness.
Let the public defender know this person has autism. This will take some detective work, including you showing up at the hearing.
