Special Education is another process which can be overwhelming to learn what your rights are and what steps you can take if you feel your child’s rights have been violated. It can also be difficult for parents to know if they should seek special education advocacy services or handle a contentious situation themselves.
Disability Rights has a fantastic free resource on the regulations that govern special education. The resource is named Special Education Rights and Responsibilities (SERR) and is an invaluable tool. The format is question and answer and gives the Education Code to reference where the answer can be found. It also has sample letters in the Appendices Section to help you with your requests.
